Old stone road of Roman Britain’s first northern frontier
Men working to lay a new watermain have found part of the road that represented Rome’s northern frontier in Britain several decades before Hadrian’s Wall was built.
The densely packed aggregate and stones of the Roman road were uncovered by Northumbrian Water during an investment scheme near Settlingstones, Hexham in northern England. Recognising its historical importance, the water utility company called in experts from Archaeological Research Services (ARS) Limited.
