At a basic level, historical revisionism simply means the process by which our understanding of the past is questioned and refined in the light of newly uncovered evidence and fresh perspectives. Arguably, very few past events we think we know about are so irrefutable as to be beyond challenge. However, to legitimately overturn the established view of an historical event, any new interpretation must be supported with new evidence or convincing reinterpretations of existing evidence, undergo rigorous informed debate, and be opened by its proponents to critical examination by peers. In itself, historical revisionism is simply a process, although it is often negatively associated with so-called ‘culture wars’ or ‘wokeness’ highlighted in contemporary media. This is especially the case when revisionism intersects with societal concerns about morality, culture, or nationalism.
