“THE MOST RESPECTFUL THING TO DO IS REALLY PLAY, IMPROVISE AND MAKE IT COME ALIVE AGAIN...”
It is one of the most iconic albums of all time - Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs by Derek And The Dominos. Released in 1970, it was the coming-together of two legendary guitarists:
Eric Clapton, the British blues rock master who had recently featured in the supergroups Cream and Blind Faith, and Duane Allman, a rising star and slide-playing virtuoso in the American outfit that defined the sound of Southern rock, The Allman Brothers Band. There was a magical chemistry between them, most powerfully illustrated in this album’s title track, a timeless rock anthem. It is an album that has inspired countless guitarists across the years. And for one player, it has a special significance.
It was in honour of Derek And The Dominos that Derek Trucks got his name. His uncle, Butch Trucks, was a founding member and drummer in The Allman Brothers Band, and in later years, once Derek had become an accomplished player, it- is a complete live performance of that classic album, recorded in August 2019, at the LOCKN’ Festival in Arrington, Virginia. And as Derek says, “More than trying to copy the record, it was about trying to tap into the energy and the feel of it.”
