My favourite VILLAINS

As creations I appreciate and admire them all’

by Lynda La Plante

In real life, women very rarely turn to crime of their own accord. They may have a warped perspective on reality due to an abusive upbringing; be coerced or manipulated into crime at the hands of someone they love deeply. They may have an addiction they need to fuel. There is usually a very sad back story.

In fiction however, female villains entertain and appeal in a way they cannot in real life. They are alien to most normal women, their psyches entirely different, unimaginable. My favourite female villain in fiction is Mrs Danvers from : chilling and downright frightening in her obsessive, the first Mrs Rochester is very frightening. Pirates Anne Bonny and Mary Read, both incredibly violent in reality, were eternalised on the silver screen. As creations I appreciate and admire them all.
