Portomobile? Motoble? Or “Shack In The Box?”
As we’ve discussed in many previous visits, making a permanent HF or VHF mobile installation in today’s newer vehicles poses a significant number of challenges, from locating the rig and its support components in the vehicle to wiring and other obstacles. Still, the ingenuity and determination of many hams can overcome these problems and I’ve been pleasantly surprised at the clean and functional installations many have shared.
Nonetheless, the proliferation of SUVs, crossovers, and other truck derivatives opens another set of options, specifically a large, accessible cargo and/or seating area which can accommodate a radio package that can easily be used for mobile or portable operations and, as needed, be quickly removed from the vehicle if cargo space is needed for some other purpose.
