During the war years Britain had to become a lot less dependent on food imports because of the considerable shipping losses due to U-boat activities in the North Atlantic. This strategy required a much greater use of agricultural tractors and implements. Post-war the small grey Ferguson tractor and its dedicated plough attachments became very popular, principally because it was light and cheap. By clever design the geometry of its rear linkage ensured that the plough dug in and pulled the tractor more firmly to the ground, so creating more grip without having to rely on extra weight. All this new machinery would need to be maintained and repaired.
All grey Fergie tractors came with six month’s warranty that included four free, on-farm services. After the warranty expired the service engineer would still make free calls to the farm to check the tractor over; any work
