EARLY in the reign of Henry VIII, there were some 850 monastic houses situated throughout England and Wales. Their demise was effectively initiated by Cardinal Wolsey in the 1520s, but it was the wholesale Henrician closures of 1536-40 that are today recognised as the Dissolution of the Monasteries.
