Walking with my mum, Indira, in Mumbai, India, I watched people repairing shoes and fixing discarded radios.

Aged six, I was fascinated.

‘Everything has potential,’ Mum explained to me. ‘Nothing is a waste.’

I’d just learnt my first lesson in recycling, and I took it to heart.

We wore hand-me-down clothes and shared furniture around the family. So I kept my toys and clothes for my brother, who was only one.
