KIWI HEDGEHOGS
I always enjoy Alasdair Mitchell’s articles. However, on reading his contribution regarding New Zealand’s hedgehog problem (Sharpshooter, 7 July), I had to check the date — no, it wasn’t 1 April. So perhaps he has his tongue in his cheek?
I imagine that hedgehogs in New Zealand are a problem for the same reason that they were/are in the Hebrides. They predate nests and chicks of ground-nesting birds.
Badgers certainly enjoy eating hedgehogs — look away, Chris Packham and others — but they also greatly enjoy nests, chicks and birds sitting.
