The spacial advantage of growing in a raised bed is that you have access to the whole bed without the need to step on it at all. This means that you can plant in a grid rather than rows, as well as planting right up to the edge of the bed, and this results in much better spacial efficiency. However, wherever you grow your vegetables, the closer they are spaced the less nutrients and water that are available to each plant and the smaller the plant will be. This can be managed to your advantage – so I tend to grow lettuces about 6
