Aftermarket tuning options PART 7
Last month we looked at Lambretta crankshafts, this month it’s the turn of those fitted in the Vespa engine. Under constant load and stress, it is important to have a crank that is strong enough for the job. Some Vespa kits will allow the engine to rev at an extremely high rpm, with plenty of power, meaning that any weakness in the crankshaft will result in failure.
The Vespa crankshaft market is by far one of the most competitive, with many manufacturers offering a wide array of choices. This covers all smallframe engines, small-block and big-block largeframe, T5 and the majority of the earlier models going back to the GS. Listing them all with their derivatives would not only take up a whole edition but become very repetitive. Instead, we have outlined some of the key names in this arena, and picked a broad selection of cranks to cover as many tuning options as possible.
Quattrini
Renowned for his high-performance cylinder kits, Max Quattrini offers crankshaft options aimed at the smallframe and the largeframe big-block engines, basically those that fit his cylinder kits. All cranks are full circle and are hand-finished to make sure the tolerances are to the highest degree. The webs on each side are perfectly balanced and weighted to give smooth delivery even at high rpm. Used in kits with high bhp without any problems, they are ideal when building a monster-powered engine.
