In the ’90s, Konawa, Oklahoma’s Patterson—an English teacher and former counselor—was struck with a desire to write a tale.

“I had it looked at by an editor guy,” Patterson explained, “and he goes, ‘Oh yeah, this is good. You just need to add more words.’”
