The pandemic not only caused the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics but it has also made the imminent games a television-only affair. There will be no spectators at most venues and coronavirus protocols will mean masked medal ceremonies for the victors. But what the games lack in atmosphere, they may make up for in variety. This edition features a record 339 events in 33 sports. New Zealanders will be competing in 22 of them and the country’s team of 211 is the biggest ever.
The games are being screened on both TVNZ and Sky Sport. The free-to-air broadcaster will be devoting 12 hours a day from 12.30pm weekdays on TVNZ 1, with Toni Street hosting in the afternoons and Scotty Stevenson in the evenings. They will be getting expert guidance from Olympic heptathlete Sarah Cowley Ross.
Sky will have 12 channels dedicated to the games between midday and 2.00am, as well as streaming access via Sky Sport Now.
