In his two and a half years racing in Formula 1, George Russell has often been called ‘Mr Saturday’. It’s a reference to the fact he has delivered some exceptional one-lap performances in qualifying.
During his time as a Williams driver, he has never been outqualified by his team-mate and holds a 46-0 record against Robert Kubica and Nicholas Latifi. Over the past couple of seasons, the Williams has been one of the least competitive cars on the grid, but Russell has often hauled his car into the second knockout session of qualifying, and for the first time got into Q3, at the Austrian GP last time out.
The only time Russell has been beaten by a team-mate on Saturday came at the Sakhir Grand Prix last December, when he was given a taste of the all-conquering Mercedes, substituting for a Covid-19 positive Lewis Hamilton.
He was denied pole position by Valtteri Bottas by a mere 0.026 seconds.
Not to be outdone, Russell stormed into the lead of the race the following day and was set for a shock victory when a tyre mix-up thwarted his ambitions.
