he introduction to our story on this issue’s cover boat, definitely struck a chord with me: “It’s a yacht for happier times reference about the “steady golden roar” of the period following the Great Depression. It’s perhaps a little too early to predict a post-pandemic Golden Age, especially since so much of the world is still wrestling with this stubborn virus, but there are hints of one. One clear sign is the number of superyachts changing hands. The brokerage market, in case you hadn’t noticed, is red hot. Boats that would usually take a year or more to sell are going in a matter of weeks. The new-build market is a more lagging indicator, but I’m hearing good things in my conversations with shipyards. People are taking to the water in unprecedented numbers, in everything from dinghies and runabouts to the very largest superyachts. Said narrator Nick Carraway of the 1920s in Baz Luhrmann’s movie version of “The parties were bigger; the shows were broader; the buildings were higher.” A century later, let’s hope all this superyacht activity suggests that our very own 20s will be just as golden.
