Five years is way too long between drinks when it comes to gulping from the fountain of ADV goodness that is the Flinders Ranges. Seriously, I’m like a red rock-smashing junkie: if I don’t get a Flinders fix every few years, I’m cactus.
Just over a year ago the stars looked to be aligning for a Flinders tour, but then the whole world went into pandemic overload, borders were closed and lockdown became a way of life. Ugh.
Fast-forward to March this year and things were returning to normal to the point where me and my equally ADV-devoted partner in crime, AAB editor-at-large Dave Darcy, finally had a Flinders trip on our radar.

But just as we were gearing up to set off, the great rain event of March 2021 hit and much of Sydney and northern NSW went underwater. Really? A year ago it was blazing bushfires. Now it’s floods. La Nina — who needs her?!
But… the forecast in the Flinders Ranges looked good, so we pressed on, moved our missuses and the dogs to higher ground, kissed them goodbye and headed west. Check ya!
