While seasoned age-groupers can and will spend upwards of £5,000 on a new bike for the sport they love, £1,000 can feel like a hefty investment for those just getting into the sport. But just what can you get for your money when you’re looking for a bike at this price point?

On test here are two budget-friendly road steeds that are seriously viable options for anyone thinking about taking their first steps into triathlon – or even for those that want an affordable workhorse to add to their garage for training, winter riding and commuting. Lining up in the battle of the budget road bikes is Giant’s Content AR 3 and the Vitus Zenium Tiagra.

Giant says the Contend AR 3 is “designed and developed for aspiring riders looking to elevate their road riding capabilities”. The bike is the best-looking one here, but Giant has stepped down to 9-speed Shimano Sora and Tektro
