Where were your first digs in London?
When I first came to London from Dundee, way back in the mists of time, I stayed at Boodle’s [private members’ club], 28, St James’s Street —dormitory-style, of course, not in the !—so I’ve always had a deep love of central London. It was another world altogether, and one of the last bastions of great old traditions. The chef wanted to cook , but all they wanted was fish and chips, sausage and mash and steak-and-kidney pudding.
