Four-cylinder, 110-130hp tractors: The multitasker

There is no shortage of choice in the hotly-contested 110-130hp sector of the UK tractor market, whether growers and producers are looking for a relatively compact and simple machine or something with more substance and features.

In short, there is a multitude of sizes, weights, transmissions and hydraulics on offer, together with the potential in many cases to add cab and front axle suspension for increased comfort, as well as touchscreen technology, more comprehensive electronic control, guidance and telematics options to cater for different applications, performance expectations and budgets.

Nor is the choice diminishing, with Deutz-Fahr, Kioti, Kubota and Valtra all introducing new ranges at this power level, albeit just as the 90-135hp 5R Series exits the John Deere line-up.

There are plenty of newly upgraded models too; most coinciding with engine changes to meet Stage V emissions rules, driven partly by the recent deadline for manufacturers to use up accumulated stocks of power units that meet previous emissions requirements. While the majority of models in this power category require the operator to grasp a gearstick or at least press buttons, there are several stepless transmission options that push the budget but provide seamless speed control and powertrain strategies suited to different applications.

Look to the Case IH, Claas, Deutz-Fahr, Fendt, John Deere, Landini and McCormick ranges for this technology, which with the exception of the John Deere and most of the Fendt machines, also offer 50km/hr packages.

The higher gearing is also available on semi-powershift Case IH Maxxum, Claas Arion 510, Deutz-Fahr 6120 and 6130, Landini 6C, McCormick X6.4 and Same Virtus models. However, all list prices noted are for the 40km/hr versions and all engine performance figures are maximum output (which may be higher than at rated speed) plus the maximum ‘boost power’ output where available.

For more in-depth information, several of these tractors (or their predecessors) will have featured in profi driving impressions and tractor tests. Check out the Test Centre at profi.co.uk to see these reports.
