Career set in Stone

Back in early January, I met for a beer with three old mates, one of whom apologised for being late — which he wasn’t, he was merely the last to arrive. He is ultra-punctual. He blamed his unusual ‘lateness’ on the book he’d been given for Christmas which he “had trouble putting down.” Given that he’s not known to the rest of us as a great reader, there was immediate intrigue as to what it could possibly be that had so preoccupied him. His “you’ve probably heard of him” was directed at me, followed instantly by “he was involved in car racing.”
