Helen Jones, 58, helps runs The Bevy in Brighton. She lives with her partner Ant, a builder and tree surgeon, 58, and has a grown-up daughter.
I could never make up my mind what I was going to do growing up, but it certainly didn’t include running a pub. I studied sociology at university in Sussex, then did a diploma in teaching English as a foreign language. I travelled and got involved with conservation, but the birth of my daughter brought me home at the age of 30.
When she was two I started teaching at summer schools and volunteering with a conservation organisation. Various jobs followed, including working outdoors with Green Gym for six years. After a spell in Devon – following the death of my best friend – I returned to Brighton and started training to be a gardener.
