Its shrieking cry is the signature sound of the seaside, embedded into the national consciousness and reinforced weekly by. (Pedants in the 1960s briefly replaced the herring gulls' accompaniment with something more tropical, but the tenacious gull of northern European shores was soon reinstated.) These are big, powerful and characterful birds, with a complex language of greetings, warnings, pleas for food and declarations of territory, exercised with vigour on both clifftops and rooftops.
