Backfire

The subject of your Muscle Car Profile in the March issue, the 1968 Ford LTD Coupe, with the 428 and four-speed, brought back for me a memory from one of your very own cruise nights.

On August 4, 2016, I attended the Hemmings Motor News Cruise Night. As always, a very nice turnout, with some very fine automobiles.

One in particular, was a 1965 Ford Galaxie 500 LTD two-door hardtop, equipped with the R-code 427 (425-hp) option and a four-speed. I liked the look with the Pyrex Glass headlamp covers. It was actually the first time I had seen a Ford with this option. It was dark blue, with a blue cloth interior and a black vinyl roof. It was nicely optioned as well, with whitewalls, wire wheel covers, AM/FM radio, and power windows. Talk about muscle with your luxury!

At the season finale that year, on August 18, I had a chance to talk to the owner. He informed me it had a 3.50:1 rear and it “pulled” very well!
