It feels a bit like mobile phones did twenty years ago: the market is seething with deals that look good on the outside, but where the devil’s in the detail. Satellite communications today are faster and more competitive than ever, but there’s still a real element of confusion about using them. Some talk about ‘airtime’ and price by the minute; others talk about data allowances. So-called bandwidth is all important.

To make sense of the welter of marketing, and keep within your budget, you need to have a very clear idea of what you want. Is satellite comms simply an emergency tool for raising the alarm offshore? Do you need to stay in touch with a business while you’re on board? And where will you be cruising – there can be deals available when you stay within 100 miles of the mainland, no matter how many borders you cross. But if you’re heading off the tradewind milk run, you’ll need something more robust.
