Road Trip

The wide-open road calls to us in the summertime. And in 1931, writer and illustrator Clarence Peter Helck created magazine illustrating how seriously Americans answered that call. His elaborate color map available at the David Rumsey Map Collection website <> includes statistics on how many passenger cars visited popular attractions like Coney Island and the Indianapolis Speedway, plus notation boxes with fun facts. The corners feature cars (spanning 1895 to 1931) that traveled the roads at that time.
