Caitlin O’Reilly is used to puzzled people frowning and asking “Why?” when it comes to her passion for swimming long distances. The 17-year-old Aucklander recently became New Zealand’s youngest Triple Crown marathon swimmer, having freestyled her way across Cook Strait, Lake Taupo and Foveaux Strait.
As she reflects on the remarkable feat, she admits there was a moment where she, too, questioned “Why?” and almost quit while swimming through shark-infested Foveaux Strait.
