In 2020 Phil Cormie was appointed head gardener at Newby Hall in North Yorkshire, tasked specifically with overhauling the overgrown Rock Garden conceived by Ellen Willmott and built just before World War I. Yet there are more than a dozen gardens here, not least of which is the Woodland Garden, with trees and shrubs collected by plant hunter E.H. Wilson, including a fine.
