However, there is an alternative to this narrative: the Persians actually accomplished their task. Could this be the case? Could the Persians be said to have won the Greco-Persian Wars, contrary to the conventional understanding? It must be borne in mind that the two Persian invasions of the Greek mainland were actually punitive expeditions. The great wars memorialised by Herodotus in came about as the result of a Greek atrocity in Asia Minor years before the Persians invaded Greece.
