Christa Ludwig

Born 1928 Mezzo-soprano

 One of the 20th century’s greatest singers, Christa Ludwig brought glamour and grit to the many roles she embodied throughout a varied and thrilling career. A versatile and tenacious performer, she was just as at home. She went from there to Darmstadt and then Hanover, before being invited by conductor Karl Böhm to join the Vienna State Opera in 1955. It was a huge turning point and she remained a fixture in Vienna for the next three decades, during which time she became an audience and critics’ favourite through countless roles on the world’s greatest stages and many acclaimed recordings.
