The magnetic fields surrounding M87’s black hole

(EHT) collaboration has unveiled new images of the black hole shadow at the core of the elliptical galaxy M87, which sits at the centre of the Virgo Cluster some 55 million light-years away. These images, unlike the iconic — photons that shimmy at only certain orientations as they travel through space. The new data contain long-awaited information about the behaviour of magnetic fields near the black hole.
