How to make money by selling your old tech
Building up a mountain of hardware and software is easy, particularly if you have the unfortunate habit – as I do – of succumbing to the latest tech. At some point, you’ll look at what you have and realise you’ve spent a sizeable chunk of cash on devices and discs. Remember that old Ouya console you bought on Kickstarter? I do and cringe.
Sitting on the desk in front of me is an i-Cheat device and I don’t even know what console it’s for. That’s next to an original Apple Watch, an iPod Shuffle from 2005 and Chuckie Egg for the BBC Micro – a computer I don’t even own.
Behind me is a box filled with old controllers. Shelves groan with DVDs and random merchandise. I can see a Commodore 64, Amstrad CPC and ZX Spectrum perched on top of a cupboard. If I’m not careful, I’m going to end up on Channel 5.
Thankfully, there are lots of options for flogging such stuff, chief among them eBay, Gumtree and Facebook Marketplace, the popular go-tos for many of us. There are also niche websites such as Sell My Retro (sellmyretro.com) and computer fairs, with the biggest being The Video Game Market (thevideogamemarket.co.uk).
