Strong opposition to draft Firearms Control Amendment Bill

Agricultural stakeholders have strongly denounced the possibility that, under a newly revived legislative proposal, South Africans would not be allowed to own guns for the purposes of self-defence.
This followed the recent call by the Civilian Secretariat for public comment on the draft of the Firearms Control Amendment Bill. According to the CSPS, a firearm applicant would have to provide a valid reason for possessing a firearm. The CSPS further announced, among other proposals, “that no firearm licences may be issued for self-defence purposes”.
