The .300 Weatherby is a favourite of mine, but it requires a magnum length action. Sure, I could have had the Zastava action opened up, but I didn't want to do that. The .300 Win. Mag. is the most popular .30 magnum because it is so accurate and packs a lot of punch downrange. But I wanted a cartridge that would also fit in a standard .30-06 length action, and preferably one without a belt.
A few months before I acquired a Browning X-Bolt Hells Canyon Speed in 26 Nosler, a non-belted magnum case which gave birth to a Nosler line of high performance cartridges including the 30 Nosler. Checking data in Nosler’s Reloading Guide No. 8, the Maximum Overall Cartridge Length of 3.340" for the 30 Nosler was the same as that of the .300 Win. Mag. which meant it would fit in the Zastava Mauser’s magazine.
