Grow your sheep operation with a sound breeding plan

Every winter, I receive phone calls from communal farmers asking for advice on how they can get their ewes to produce more milk for newborn lambs. While this is sometimes due to poor genetics or livestock illness, generally it’s because the ewes are not ingesting enough good-quality feed and are therefore undernourished.

Lambs that don’t obtain enough milk during the first days of life will often become emaciated, with immune
