Maunalua Bay Lay Net Busted
Four Waipahu men, Lordleigh Caraang (41), Jonie Dalo (60), Jamie Sarmiento (47) and Benny Sampaya (64), were cited by Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) Division of Conservation and Resource Enforcement (DOCARE) officers for allegedly setting illegal lay nets at Paiko Lagoon in East Oahu’s Maunalua Bay. Complaints from local fishermen and residents alerted DOCARE, and an anonymous tip pointed officers to the poachers’ truck. On scene, officers observed a man leaving the truck, swimming out to the net floats and returning to shore. Officers confiscated multiple lay nets along with fish and one lobster.
DOCARE alleged one man set the nets with assistance of the others. Charges include possession of multiple species of undersized aquatic life including moi, papio and ‘o‘io. The netters also had an out-of-season lobster, which was returned to the water. It is illegal to lay nets on O‘ahu’s South Shore from Kawaihoa Point to Keahi Point.
