Waiting excitedly for the plush red curtain to rise in Catherine the Great’s private theatre, I wondered where the great Empress herself had sat. She built this intimate but opulent auditorium inside her Winter Palace in St Petersburg because she didn’t want to go out in the cold. And who could blame her wanting to avoid those bitter Russian winters?
