Daniel Hermanus Pienaar was born in Ladybrand in the Orange Free State on 27 August 1893. During the First World War (1914-1918), he first served under General Louis Botha as an artilleryman during the invasion of German South West Africa, then with the South African Overseas Expeditionary Force under General Jan Smuts when it fought against the Germans in East Africa. During this gruelling and difficult campaign with the South African Field Artillery Brigade, Pienaar was mentioned several times in despatches for bravery.
From 1917 until the end of the war, Pienaar saw action in Palestine. The 24-year-old finished the war with the rank
