In the doldrums

It’s every Opposition’s lot to spend years in purgatory grabbing vainly for the greased pig that is political relevancy.

When you’re not only out of office but there’s a global pandemic and one or two wars brewing abroad, the pig is additionally Teflon coated and wearing skates.

Looking at National’s continued poll slough, the commentariat – meriting no prize for originality – has again concluded that the chief pig-grabber needs to be replaced.

Even setting aside the wisdom of this advice – given that replacing the leader only works about one time in four in reversing a poll slump rather than making it
