ETERNAL OPTIMISTS kicked the spring season off with a win at the Worcestershire, where a new committee had put in tremendous efforts to produce good ground, helped by wet snow on the day.

From first draw, the squad from the Wishful Thinkers’ stable showed their usual pedal to the metal pace, Henry Chamberlain giving a great lead on Abu. Cutting every corner, they all got great shots over the final twisty section of hedges, Joe Stevenson battling to keep the enthusiastic Stan in check and Ed Chamberlain and Simon Coady always in touch.

“The ground was better than expected and we’re thrilled to be out,” said Simon, who is based on the Isle of Man. “Even if it means quarantining when I get back.”
