Digital files are just as susceptible to damage as physical ones. Their data can become corrupted when a program suffers a problem while saving the file, when your hard drive develops bad sectors (clusters of storage space) and through malware infection, but this usually isn’t obvious until you try to investigate further.

When you see an error message that an important file can’t be opened or find that a precious photo is now distorted, you should first check for a backup copy, perhaps in your online storage service or on your camera’s SD card. But if you don’t have another version, you can often fix the corrupted file without paying for professional repairs. Here, we explain the best methods for six different file types.
