Why are phones more interesting than tumble dryers?
I’m delighted that the Government is introducing a law to force phone manufacturers to reveal upfront how long they’ll provide security updates for their devices (‘Question of the Fortnight’, Issue 605, pictured right). I hope this will be the first step in a fightback against these companies.
Since the first iPhone came out, the likes of Apple and Samsung have carried out an astonishing marketing trick on us. Before smartphones, manufacturers in all industries would make a selling point out of how long a product would last. But smartphones seemed to change the laws of marketing by persuading consumers that there was a benefit in a product becoming obsolete after only a few years.
Phones seemed to have become a fashion
