THE GOOD OLD DAYS

Dear Classic American, While looking on eBay I came across a copy of Exchange and Mart from May 1980. This reminded me of running around to the paper shop on a Thursday morning to see what was on offer that week. I had just turned 20 at the time and it was around then that I made my way to “opposite Wembley conference centre” for my first Yank, a ’71 yellow Mach 1 that I paid £1925 for. A year or so passed and I headed back down for an absolutely immaculate ’76 T-bird, then came a ’73 454 ’Vette from Kidderminster (£4200) and a few more. I remember as a 23-year-old paying £153 insurance on the ’Vette with Norwich Union.

Anyway, back to the Exchange and Mart, where the recently mentioned James Bond Cougar was for sale for a mere £2250 (it sold at auction a couple of months ago for $480,000!), a ’69 Roadrunner for £2000, a 440 Coronet for £1450 and
