How did Aristotle put it? Incident, not character, is what holds a story together. Any number of things may happen to a particular character, but that doesn’t mean they add up to a story. To achieve true coherence, a story should focus on an entire, self-contained incident, complete with beginning, middle and end.
Among the many virtues of presents a ticker tape of random, fleeting vignettes held together only by the restless consciousness of the narrator.
