Pro: Ed Loughran, 49, Richmond, Va. Known by bass fans as “the Barrister,” Loughran is a practicing attorney specializing in civil litigation. He’s fishing his second year on the Elite Series.

Most Elite Series competitors started their careers fishing local tournaments and/or guiding while dreaming big about one day turning pro. Ed Loughran’s fishing career followed suit — for a while, at least. “I grew up in Washington, D.C., and began guiding on the Potomac River when I was a teenager,” Loughran told . “I also fished the Red Man circuit successfully and became eastern director of the Budweiser fishing team. So yeah, I thought I was on a predictable path toward turning pro.” But soon that path took a major diversion due to Loughran’s prudent decisions regarding higher education. “I attended George Mason University while also fishing local tournaments, then went on to graduate from law school at the University of Richmond while competing
