Voyageur Dollar Carries Historical Importance

Coin collecting isn’t just about how much a coin is worth or its state of preservation. These are important but more so, in my mind, is the background of the piece. What makes it collectible? What makes it part of history and worthy to be displayed and cherished regardless of purchase price or grade?

Canada’s voyageur dollar, first minted in 1935, is a good example. It’s not rare, as there are many dates bearing the design. However, its design of a canoe manned by a Native American and a voyageur, with an islet in the background, is not only attractive and iconic, but also its rich in history, making it highly collectible in any grade.

In “Song of the Paddle,” in the magazine, Claudia Pelkey brings this to life as she tells the story behind the canoe, its importance to Canada and of the men who plied the nation’s rivers and lakes.
