One of the fabulous things about this magazine is the reviews section: many readers tell me how much they value it when considering the next spend. It’s invaluable because a glance along any retailer’s shelves (virtual or real) will bombard the senses with an array of data that can inject uncertainty into a purchasing process.

If it’s any consolation, it’s not a lot easier from our side of the counter. Selling products is a retailer’s mission and many are perfectly happy to flog a customer exactly what they have asked for. There’s nothing wrong with this. You wouldn’t expect the Spanish Inquisition from a checkout operator over the suitability of a tin of beans. That’s mainly because supermarkets trust that we’re aware of the consequences of a misguided bean sale, but also because nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition! <Insert terrifying sound FX here>
