An important concept in jazz, is that of tension and release, dissonance and consonance, or outside and inside playing. Simply put, harmonic or melodic tension that wants to be resolved.
In the II-V-I sequence that crops up in all jazz standards, the Dominant V7 chord can be altered to add richer sounding tones to create this tension. We can sharpen or flatten the 5th, or we can add b 9 or #9 notes. An ‘Altered 7’ chord might contain combinations of these tension notes, such as a G7 b 5 b 9.
