RURAL organisations across the UK are pleading with visitors to respect the countryside. Scottish Land & Estates is), but, after recent blazes on moors, CLA president Mark Bridgeman is reiterating that disposable barbecues ‘should be avoided at all costs’. His words are likely to resonate with the National Trust, which saw an increase in barbecuing and littering last year. ‘We are very much supporters of the Countryside Code,’ says Rob Rhodes, head of countryside management and rangers. ‘We’ll be doing all we can across our channels to urge people to follow the guidance, including asking them to take all litter home, not to fly-camp, to stick to paths and to not light barbecues in undesignated areas.’
