Street’s a far-sighted man and had planned the sale of Foster’s for over six years, giving him plenty of time to plot his next move. “I’m no good at bridge, bowls or golf, but I have to have a challenge. So I decided to form a trust to restore the odd boat. I’ve always admired the older wooden boatbuilders and, being in the industry for so long, it was chance to put something back.”

He founded the Classic Yacht Charitable Trust (CYCT) in 2003 and its first acquisition was the yacht Gloriana. The first yacht built by the Logan brothers (Robert, Arch and John) in 1892, Gloriana was a half-scale version of the Nathanael Herreshoff-designed champion yacht of the same name.

While her long-time owner Jim Cottier had returned the New Zealand to a mostly original configuration, she required a full restoration. This was done by Street’s favourite boatbuilder, Wayne Oslen of Horizon Boats, whose name will regularly appear throughout
