THE LISTENING POST
~ I begin this month with some very sad news. You may have heard of the passing of Bob (Big Signal) Brown, KW3F. For decades he was a star in the SWBC world. Among his other significant achievements, he was a guiding light in the reorganization of the North American Shortwave Association (NASWA), he founded and was net control of the SWL Net, which met Sunday mornings on 40 meters to exchange last minute tips, and he was instrumental in creating the midwinter SWL Fest (now in its 34th year). We lost Bob in February to leukemia, which he battled valiantly for several years. R.I.P., Bob!
~ Reporter Harold Sellers notes that there are two new Ethiopian opposition broadcasts on the air. One is Dimtse Woyane International using 15160 kHz via France. Harold doesn’t have a full schedule, but he notes it in the 1600-1700 UTC hour. The other broadcaster, also via France, is Voice of the Dawn Tigray (a.k.a. Dimtse Wegahta) on 15340 kHz coming on suddenly at 1700 UTC, both using the Tigray language.
~ All India Radio is undergoing further changes: All of its domestic AM and FM services are being rebranded so that each state capital will have its own network. There will also be nine new national entertainment channels, plus the nationwide Vividh Bharati entertainment service. It is still unclear as to how these changes will affect its shortwave broadcasts, if they do at all.
